Terry Hunt
Originality
As a musician, artist, photographer and filmmaker, Terry Hunt makes a connection between all of these disciplines. Rhythm, form, texture and color are all common terms used to describe these art forms, and all of his artistic creations incorporate these principles. He uses found objects in many of his pieces, predominantly metal and wood, and occasionally stone. He feels that these objects find him when he is in a receptive state more often than when he goes looking for them.
Creativity
The current COVID-19 crisis has created large blocks of time at home where Terry works. He began looking at some wood pieces that he has had for 25 to 35 years planning to incorporate into art someday. He realized that there would never be a better opportunity to complete these projects. He currently has two pieces in the Treespeak show at the Confluence Gallery in Twisp. two pieces in the current show, Beginner’s Mind and Ancient Memories are a direct result of “sheltering in place”. They also reflect Terry’s interest in Japanese language and culture which developed while he was living in Boulder, Colorado.
Artistry
In the Methow Valley, Terry has been very active in the music scene as a composer, band leader, soloist, conductor of choirs and orchestras, executive director of Cascadia Music, and co-founder of the Pipestone School of Music. He has also received a GAP Grant from the Artist’s Trust in Seattle, and his film, With Respect to Farming, won the Icicle Prize for best documentary.
He received his Bachelor’s degree and Master of Arts while living in Colorado. After leaving Colorado, he lived in Japan for a year and a half before moving to the Methow Valley with his wife, Pam.
“I came to realize that I needed to spend the majority of my time working on creative projects, and educating myself in how to better bring them to fruition.”
